Court overturns Sotomayor in firefighter case

The U.S. Supreme Court, divided 5-4 along left/right lines, has voted in favor of white firefighters in Connecticut who claimed reverse discrimination. More here, including a link to the full text of the decision.

Alongside Night by J. Neil Schulman, winner of the 1989 Prometheus Hall of Fame Award, is now available as a free electronic book. This is apparently an authorized version and not some kind of pirate thing; information here. The Web site includes an endorsement of the book from Congressman Ron Paul.

Arson destroys topless coffee shop in Maine

The Grand View Topless Coffee Shop in Vassalboro, Maine, has been burned down in an apparent act of arson, CNN reports. Police say it was arson.

Blame the birds

“Birds are known to carry every single one of the 144 varieties of influenza virus … For this reason, most scientists believe that all forms of the virus originated in birds and every flu is on some level a kind of bird flu.”

So says Slate magazine, which answers an interesting question, “Does Every Animal Have Its Own Kind of Flu?”
